At Old Year's End
© 2003 Dolores T. Mazurkewicz, Ph.D.

Recalling and reviewing, as the year approaches end,
the joys and blessings - small and large,
human and otherwise.

Always with the cats - welcomed, stray guests from the outside,
getting shelter and salving in the laundry room,
giving grateful purrs and nudges. And...
Those indoor treasures, those that stayed on, those that had to leave -
each of them distinct, little fur-faced personalities.
Their unselfish and non-judgmental affection and devotion;
this is their constancy.
This is their blessing of abundance
that regenerates and radiates - ad infinitum.

That dear little family of deer,
sure-footedly passing by the living room windows,
aware of everything of which they need to keep aware,
forsaking the rest.
Such efficient consciousness.
Such purpose.

New grass and sunflowers, growing wherever and whenever they want
The sheltering pines, amid the precious sage brush, rejuvenated,
And the ever-present juniper, heavy with berries.

What else did we receive?
Those vermillion sunsets, that vast expanse
where sky and land meet.
Some soft rains, some needed snows,
changing seasons,
sunshine galore,
dusks and dark nights and firelight -
some that ravaged, some that soothed.

All this wealth, all these offerings, there for the having.
Right in front of us, giving itself or helping us recall,
old, past gifts.
Memories are embedded everywhere.
Thank the stars! (Oh yes, and thank all those stars!)
